A Deal man has admitted taking part in a street fight which left a man lying injured on the floor with his jaw broken in three places.

Nathan Mitford flew in from the Netherlands, where he works, expecting a trial at Canterbury Crown Court on a charge of grievous bodily harm.

However, after several hours of legal discussions, Mitford, admitted a lesser charge of assaulting victim Daniel Carr causing him actual bodily harm.

The fight, which took place in Queen Street, Deal in July 2016 was recorded by several closed-circuit cameras and shown to Judge Simon James.

A second man, Robbie Brannan, 26, of Anglers Drive, Deal admitted a charge of causing Mr Carr grievous bodily harm at an earlier hearing.

Both men will be sentenced next week.

Mitford, 36, from St James Close, Deal, was given bail and was warned he could face a jail sentence.

His barrister Rupert Wheeler told the court: “The defendant pleads guilty on the basis he admits striking Mr Carr, causing him to stumble backwards.

“He was not part of the attack by Brannan and he did not intend to assist Brannan in his attack on Mr Carr.”

The judge ordered a pre-sentence report for the next hearing when fuller details of the attacks and Mr Carr’s injuries will be given.

He told Mitford: “You have admitted a charge which is less serious than the one which you were originally charged with and I now have to decide what the appropriate sentence will be.”
