A ballot box

Polling stations have closed in Dover, Deal and
Sandwich and people have now decided who they want to serve them on
the district, town and parish councils.

The count will not take place until tomorrow.

Voters have also had to decide whether to back plans to
change the way in which MPs are elected, with a referendum on
whether the current first past thee post system should be replaced
with the alternative vote.

All 45 seats were up for grabs on Dover District Council, with
the Conservatives hoping to keep control. Labour targetted the
area, however, with visits from party leader Ed Miliband and two
shadow ministers.

In some wards Labour only need to gain a few more votes to
take seats from the Conservatives. Liberal Democrats are hoping
they have kept the two seats they had and, perhaps, gained one
or two more.

There were also elections for Dover and Deal town councils,
but not at Sandwich where there were just enough people nominated
to fill the seats available.

Several parish councils also had elections.

The results will be watched carefully by the three main parties
as they are the first comprehensive test of public opinion since
the general election.

One interesting aspect of the day is whether one man can has
been able to win the seven seats he was standing for. Vic Matcham,
from River, stood for five parish councils, as well as Dover town
and Dover district councils. He had already gained four parish
council seats because there were not enough candidates to hold
elections in those areas.
