Accident

Coombe Valley Road in Dover has re-opened, nine days after a lorry crashed into a railway bridge causing road and rail chaos.

Police officers were called to the scene just after 10am on Tuesday, December 1, after a lorry hit the bridge, and then reversed into a bus.

The collision with the bridge caused a girder to crack and Network Rail engineers were called in to examine the extent of the damage. Train services between Dover and Canterbury and between Dover and Ramsgate were suspended while repair work was carried out.

The road under the bridge was also closed, with motorists being diverted via River. The road remained closed until Thursday, December 10, with scaffolding erected under the bridge to enable repairs to be carried out.

Network Rail said there was no excuse for vehicles to hit the bridge, as warning signs, giving the clearance height, were clearly displayed on the approaches.

Anyone who witnessed the collision has been asked to contact the police on 01304 240055.
