Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club's Steve Tiley slipped down the Open Championship leaderboard to eventually finish in a tie for 68th place.

The 27-year-old from Herne Bay, pictured, came through local final qualifying to earn his place in the Championship and produced a superb six-under-par 66 in the first round on Thursday to finish the day just three shots behind the leader, Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy.

But, like McIlroy, Tiley was one of the later starters in Friday's second round and suffered in the high winds which forced play to be suspended for an hour.

Tiley was unable to complete his round and had to make an early start on Saturday morning, eventually struggling to a seven-over-par 79. That was still good enough to beat the cut and he then regained some of his composure with a third-round 73 before finishing with a final round 74.

His total of four-over-par 292 left him 20 shots behind the surprise winner, Louis Oosthuizen of South Africa.

Surrey's Zane Scotland, who is attached to Prince's Golf Club at Sandwich Bay, finished two shots ahead of Tiley after rounds of 70, 74, 72 and 74.
