Motorists in Deal and Walmer have been caught speeding, failing to wear a seat belt and using mobile phones.

These were the most common offences when Kent Police stopped drivers on June 5 as part of a road safety initiative.

The campaign was organised by the Dover District Community Safety Partnership and supported by KCC Community Wardens.

Heidi Sutcliffe from the Community Safety Partnership said: “The partnership responds to residents’ concerns and this is one of many initiatives carried out around road safety in the district.”

Acting Police Sergeant Ian Belsey from Kent Police, added: “It is important for us to remind road users of the law.

“Whilst on this occasion it was about awareness and education, we’re planning future enforcement initiatives.”

Motorists were also given safety advice by Kent Fire and Rescue Services.

KFRS Road Safety Manager Alexa Kersting-Woods said: “We hope that more people will now realise just how essential it is to buckle up every time they travel in a vehicle, no matter how short the journey.

“We also hope that it prompts drivers to stay focussed and to think twice about putting themselves or others in danger for the sake of a call, text or other activity that can wait.”
