Dover Athletic manager Nicky Forster will make solving Whites’ goalscoring problems top of his summer agenda in the wake of their play-off disappointment.

Dover’s slim hopes of reaching the Blue Square Bet South play-offs finally evaporated on Tuesday night when Basingstoke won 2-0 at Hampton & Richmond to move into fifth place in the table, three points ahead of Chelmsford and five in front of Dover with one more round of matches left to play on Saturday.

The best Whites can now hope for is to finish sixth, one place outside the play-off positions, providing they win at Weston-super-Mare and Chelmsford lose at home to champions Woking.

After finishing seventh last season it means another "not quite good enough" entry on Dover’s end-of-term report and Forster identified what he saw as the main problem after last Saturday’s 2-2 home draw with Maidenhead.

Forster (pictured) said: "I think in our time here our problem has been putting the ball in the back of the net and we have nothing else to blame (for not reaching the play-offs) than our inability to kill teams off.

"Although it’s dropped a bit of late our defensive record was in the top three all the way up the Farnborough game (last month), but our inability to be ruthless in front of goal has cost us and that’s where I think we need to improve."

Their ‘goals for’ tally of 61 is, apart from Dorchester’s, the lowest of the teams in the top 10.
