People in Dover and Deal are being asked to stock up on over-the-counter medicines instead of contacting their GP.

At this time of year many people succumb to coughs and colds and other minor ailments that can easily be treated with non-prescription drugs.

GP Dr Mark Jones, who chairs the East Kent Urgent Care and Long-Term Conditions Integrated Care Board, said: “It’s a good idea to have a well-stocked medicine cabinet at any time of the year – and it’s particularly helpful over the New Year period.

It received a good rating. Stock image.

“Many coughs and colds and minor illnesses clear up by themselves within 48 hours, and there’s no need to contact a GP. The pressures on GP surgeries can be enormous at this time of year – so we always advise people think before making an appointment.

“Everyone should check on medicine cabinet essentials, such as over-the-counter cough, cold, flu and indigestion remedies, plasters and a thermometer, to avoid running out.”

Dr Jones added: “Everyone should be able to find what they need in a supermarket when they’re doing their food shopping. If you have a well-stocked medicine cabinet, it can give added peace of mind.”

Patients can check opening times, or seek advice for common symptoms by using our Health Help Now app – available from the App Store and Google Play, or at www.healthhelpnow-nhs.net

Anyone who needs medical advice fast when it is not a 999 emergency should call NHS 111 when their practice is closed.
