Walmer Green is the place to be today.

Not only is Walmer Lifeboat Station unlocking its doors for its annual open day but Walmer Parish Churches is also hosting its summer fair.

The joint community event has been running for more than 20 years.

The two events will run together

There will be stalls selling cakes, preserves, bric-a-brac, garden items, and children’s toys; all the fun of the fair with games, tombola, and raffles; entertainment and displays by Charlie Chuckle, the Downs Primary School and rock choirs.

The lifeboat station will be open from 10am and Walmer’s two inshore lifeboats, A85 Donald McLauchlan and D Class lifeboat Duggie Rodbard, are available for the public to view.

Lifeboat crew, shore crew and station volunteers are available to answer any questions and demonstrate kit.

There will also be audio-visual displays inside the boathouse and the station shop will be open so visitors can buy souvenirs.

Representatives of the fire and ambulance services, UK Marine Life Rescue and the Coastguard Mobile Unit have been invited to highlight the work they do.

Dave the Dalek has also been invited.

The day is set to finish with a display at sea by Walmer’s two lifeboats.

The launch will take place between 1pm and 2pm subject to operational commitments.

Fair organiser Chris Flint said: “This is one of the highlights of the summer in Walmer.

“So many people put so much effort in to prepare throughout the year and a successful day would be the best thanks to them.

“All are welcome to come along and enjoy the day.”
