Sun shines on Dover regatta - despite the stormy forecast

The forecast was for heavy rain, thunderstorms and even hail, but the sun shone on most of Dover regatta today, bringing out thousands of people to enjoy the spectacle.

A heavy shower in the morning did nothing to deter the enthusiasm of the organisers, or the teams taking part in the Port Dash rowing challenge.

Sponsored by the Port of Dover, the races were raising money for Pegasus Playscheme and involved crews competing against each other to be crowned Port Dash champions.

The eventual winners were Dover Rugby Club.

There were dozens of stalls and sideshows on the promenade, including KMfm, and Kent Fire and Rescue Service put on a display with the other emergency services.

And air-sea rescue demonstration became just a sea rescue when the RAF helicopter was unable to attend, but Dover and Walmer lifeboat crews showed how they rescue people from the sea.

Entertainment included Rebecca Robinson and the Victory Wartime Band, Sherbet Moon Choir and the Landmark Show Choir.

People also had the chance to try some water sports, and there were special activities for the children.

The portrait bench, depicting Olympic torchbearer Jamie Clark, Dame Vera Lynn and James Bond author Ian Fleming, was unveiled on the seafront as part of the day's celebrations.

Full report and pages of pictures in the Dover Mercury, out on Thursday August 1.
