Two East Kent golfers are flying out to Jamaica today (Thursday) to take part in the grand finals of a national competition.

Ben Capper, a 17-handicap member of Broome Park GC, and Sam Gibbons, a 12-handicap member of Royal St George’s Artisans section, have qualified for the climax of the Global Golfers’ Jamaica Doubles, organised by the Daily Express.

The three-day competition starts on Saturday at the Breezes Runaway Bay Resort and Golf Club on the north coast of the Caribbean island.

Capper, from Deal, and Gibbons, from Eastry, will be up against five other pairs who qualifed from the UK finals at the Forest of Arden GC at Coventry last week.

The local duo came out on top against 35 other pairs at the Forest of Arden, scoring a combined total of 66 stableford points – even though Gibbons had to use a three-iron as a putter!

Capper said: "We got to the first green in the final and then Sam realised he had forgotten to put his putter in his bag. So he had to use his three-iron to putt with all the way round but he still managed to get a birdie."

Gibbons finished with 28 points but it was 38 points from Capper which clinched first place for the duo.
