The start of the Gallipoli campaign in the First World War has been marked in Deal this afternoon (Saturday).

A special service was held at St George's Church in the High Street at 2.30pm.

Organised by Deal Town Council, it commemorated Arthur Tisdall and the other local men who died at Gallipoli.

The service included representatives from the council in association with St George's Church, Castle Community College and the Addelam History Society.

Meanwhile, Deal Maritime and Local History Museum includes a tribute to Gallipoli within its First World War trench recreation in the boatyard.

The commentary, by Frances Fyfield crime novelist and BBC Radio Four presenter, makes particular mention of Sub Lieutenant Arthur Walderne St Clair Tisdall VC, a son of the Vicar of St George's Church, Deal, who was killed at Gallipoli and posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for gallantry.

The museum, in St George's Road, Deal, welcomed visitors today and is open from noon tomorrow Sunday, closing at 4pm.
