North Foreland golfer Max Orrin

Max Orrin helped England's amateur golf team win the European Men’s Team Championship at the weekend.

The 19-year-old Royal Cinque Ports GC member scored two crucial victories as England, the 2011 winners, regained the crown by beating Scotland 4½-2½ in the final at Silkeborg Ry GC in Jutland, Denmark.

The foundation was built in the morning when England won both the foursomes. Orrin and Nathan Kimsey beat Graeme Robertson and Jack McDonald 4&2, while Garrick Porteous – who won the Amateur Championship at Deal last month – and Neil Raymond overcame James Ross and Ewan Scott by the same margin.

But the singles proved a nail-biting affair, with Scotland winning two of the first three to reduce England’s lead to 3-2.

It was left to Orrin, who lives at Birchington, to see England to the necessary fourth point but he had to bounce back from trailing to Scott Borrowman to force extra holes before securing victory on the 19th.

“It was a great performance,” said England performance director Nigel Edwards. “The lads stuck to the task when Scotland put us under pressure. There was some great play coming down the closing holes.”
