Home Secretary Priti Patel has laid out her ideas for tougher immigration plans as around 150 asylum seekers arrived in the UK yesterday.

Ms Patel has outlined new laws which would allow people who enter the UK legally be given the right to remain here, while those who enter illegally will not have the same entitlements.

Priti Patel has outlined a new immigration plan which would allow asylum seekers arriving legally to stay in the UK

She added the new system, which has been described as "the biggest overhaul of the UK's asylum system in decades", will make it "harder" for people to stay here if they arrived "via an illegal route".

The news comes after around 150 asylum seekers entered the UK yesterday.

More details on the new plan are set to be revealed later today.

According to the BBC Ms Patel said: "If people arrive illegally, they will no longer have the same entitlements as those who arrive legally, and it will be harder for them to stay.

"I make no apology for these actions being firm, but as they will also save lives and target people smugglers, they are also undeniably fair."

Thousands of people have made the journey across the Channel in recent years

Last week it was suggested asylum seekers arriving to the UK could be sent to processing centres abroad under the Home Secretary's plans.
