Accident may hold up ferry services

DELAYS are likely at the Port of Dover this weekend following an accident in Calais which resulted in three people being injured.

It is understood that a cable snapped on one of the berths as vehicles were disembarking from the P&O Ferries ship Pride of Burgundy. Two lorries overturned, and their drivers, together with a crane driver, were injured.

The accident happened on Tuesday night, and an investigation is underway.

The berth is now out of action, and another berth is undergoing maintenance work. That means that fewer berths are operational at Calais, and all the P&O Ferries and SeaFrance ships will have to share them.

That could lead to delays, especially as this weekend marks the start of the school half-term holiday when thousands of people traditionally head for the continent for a break.
