Yobs threatened a newly-qualified teen driver, jumping on his bonnet and stomping on the windscreen in a terrifying attack.

The 17-year-old boy was driving his orange Fiat Punto along Townwall Street just after 10.20pm on Thursday, April 2 before the frightening assault unfolded.

He dropped a friend off outside the County Hotel when a group of teenagers began hitting his car, knocking off his wing mirror.

But as the cornered teen tried to drive away, he became stuck in traffic and one of the group jumped on to the bonnet of the car and began stomping on the windscreen.

The driver was also threatened during the incident, while the rest of the group stood watching next to the central reservation.

The youngster's car suffered several hundred pounds of damage in the violent attack.

Police Constable Stephen Noddings said: "We are treating this as an isolated incident and are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen the group in the area before, during or after the car was damaged."
