A small blaze broke out in the electrical cupboard of a Hillside Road home last night.

Two fire crews attended at 11.30pm wearing breathing apparatus and using a fire extinguisher to put it out.

Watch manager Andy Batchelor said: "We were there about an hour making it all safe and isolated the electric supply.

"The occupant had already removed the children and took them across the road to safety."

It is believed it was the electric meter that had initially started the fire.

Smoke had spread throughout the house but the fire did not spread outside of the cupboard.

Mr Batchelor said: "If you are in any doubt make sure everyone is out - stay out and make sure you call us out."
