Dover TAP is back on this afternoon, highways officials warn.

The speed and traffic restriction has been brought in at Aycliffe because of high numbers of lorries in the area.

Kent County Council's highways department made the announcement just after 2pm today.

A tweet from it said: "Due to high volumes of freight traffic the Dover TAP scheme on the A20 at Aycliffe is being implemented, please allow extra time for your journey."

KCC says that the restriction is to prevent port-bound traffic from disrupting the local road network and the A20 through Dover town.

Highways England's Dover TAP (Traffic Assessment Project) is used with traffic lights to control the flow of lorries coming into the town at busy times.

It is usually from the the Round Hill Tunnels at Folkestone to Aycliffe and involves a 40pmh speed limit for all traffic, when the speed limit is usually 70.

The 40mph limit had been in place constantly for two years until last July and now is only enforced at times when TAP is used.

It is not yet know how long this latest restriction will last.
