A home in Mayfield Avenue has been damaged by smoke following a fire in a basement kitchen.

Firefighters were called to the scene at around 7pm yesterday and discovered the home was without a smoke alarm.

They extinguished the fire with a hose reel jet, before using a positive pressure ventilation fan to clear the smoke.

The cooker is also believed to be destroyed.

The crew checked for remaining hot spots using a thermal imaging camera.

No one was injured.

Once the scene was safe, the firefighters did a home safety visit, fitting smoke alarms in the property and reassuring neighbours.
