A pink army marched to help combat breast cancer.

And their efforts are expected to raise £30,000, smashing the target figure of £25,000.

Nearly 600 men and women walked up and down Dover seafront dressed in pink on Saturday night in Full Moon Walk for Breast Cancer Care.

Dover Castle was lit pink that night to raise awareness of the event.

The ribbon to start the walk was cut by Jo Knight, a cancer survivor from River, and the event was organised by Tracy Whiteaker of Whitfield.

She had had a breast cancer scare and had to wait two weeks to learn that she was free of the illness.

She said: “It was a spectacular night. The White Horse pub sold 228 pink cocktails, which in itself made £1,140.”

About 570 people, called the Dover Pink Army, took part in two walks of 5km (3.11miles) and 10km (6.21 miles) back and forth between Harbour House and the Gateway Flats.

The exact sum raised by today was £26,273.28 and more is due in.

English Heritage agreed to have Dover Castle lit that night and many local organisations also helped. Mascalls Carpets, of Whitfield, provided a large pink arch while contractors for the Dover Western Docks Revival VSBW provided security and lighting and donated £1,000 to Breast Cancer Care.

Mrs Whiteaker thanked Dover Harbour Board as the event was on its land.

The next walk in Dover is planned for May 18 next year.
