Two large windows have been shattered at a building on Dover seafront after vandals threw pebbles at Dover Sea Sports and Hythe Bay Restaurant on Saturday night.

James Salmon, director of Dover Sea Sports, was the first to discover the damage on Sunday morning.

He said although the shattered beach control office window was still in tact, it could have caved in at any time.

“It is toughened double glazed glass that had a number of beach stones thrown at it with some serious force,” he said.

Hythe Bay Restaurant above Dover Sea Sports, also fell victim to the stone throwing, which smashed a large panel of glass that makes up part of the panoramic view across the Channel.

Assistant manager Alison James said: “We have two walls of windows in our restaurant and it was completely smashed on the western side.

“We were fine to open on Sunday – but it is quite dangerous as it was high up.” The restaurant aims to replace the glass within the next few weeks.

Mr Salmon added: “The whole concrete area was covered in stones, so whoever it was had certainly given it a serious go.”

Your Leisure, which manages the building, has temporarily placed a sheet of Perspex over the broken window before a replacement, purpose-made sealed unit, is fitted.

The centre fell prey to vandals in July when the Cinque Port Pirates Sailing Club, which stores its equipment at the sea sports section, had two dinghies stolen.

A port spokesman said: “Port of Dover Police are aware of criminal damage taking place at DSSC and Hythe Bay Restaurant on Saturday night and are investigating.”
