An MP is calling for answers after 100 migrants stormed the port of Calais.

Charlie Elphicke, who represents Dover and Deal, said it is "important to know how on earth this could happen" after the incident on Saturday evening.

The migrants caused delays to ferries arriving from Dover and departing from France with the port being closed for about an hour.

It came on the same day 11 suspected migrants were found at a Ashford lorry park.

Police were seen scanning fields around the Waterbrook Truckstop on Waterbrook Avenue yesterday, with nine men and two women found on Saturday morning.

A Home Office spokesman said that the group, who claimed to be Eritrean, were handed over to immigration officials.

French media reported that 100 migrants broke into the dock area of the port of Calais.

Many managed to get on board a DFDS Calais Seaways ferry, with 63 people being arrested.

Mr Elphicke tweeted: "How were migrants able to storm a DFDS ferry at Calais? Thoughts with the crew who must have had a frightening experience. Seems a very worrying security lapse at the Port of Calais. Important to know how on earth this could happen."
