A Mercedes mini-bus exploded into a ball of fire on a quiet country road in Dover on Wednesday.

Firefighters were called to the burning vehicle in Archers Court Road just after 12.30pm, by which time it was engulfed in smoke and flames.

A couple and their baby were driving along the road when they smelt burning, according to a spokesman from KFRS.

It is thought the car is a red people carrier. Picture from social media.

They got out of the car, called the fire brigade and waited about 100m down the road to prevent the baby from inhaling the smoke.

The fire, which started in the engine compartment, was put out by one crew.

The spokesman said: "When we first got there no one was around and I initially thought it was arson but then I noticed the man quite a distance away from the vehicle.

"He did exactly the right thing - because of the baby he wanted to steer well clear of the smoke.

"The gentleman and his wife walked to the in-laws who lived in Whitfield."

No one was injured and firefighters left at 1pm.
