Police have written letters to residents of a Dover street after a hammer attack.

A man in his 40s from the Dover area was arrested nearby on suspicion of assault but officers still seek CCTV footage as they continue their investigations.

Clarendon Place, Dover, where the hammer attack happened.

The incident, which happened inside a home, took place on Monday at 12.50pm.

The victim and the man arrested are believed to be known to each other.

In his letter, which was posted through doors yesterday, PC Johnston of Folkestone Police Station said: "As this incident took place within a residence, I appreciate you may not have seen or heard any part of the assault. However, I would be very interested to hear from anyone who has CCTV which covers the street and which still has footage still retained from the date of the assault on May 25."

Footage of a lone male walking along the street is sought, particularly if he is shown carrying a hammer or other tool.

PC Johnston added that the letters replaced usual door-to-door enquiries because of Covid-19.

Today a Kent Police spokesman said: "Kent Police were called at 12.55pm on Monday 25 May 2020 to a report of an injured man in Clarendon Place, Dover.

Officers attended along with South East Coast Ambulance Service and it was reported that the injured man had been assaulted by a man with a hammer.

A man in his 40s from the Dover area was arrested nearby on suspicion of assault and has since been bailed until Thursday 18 June 2020."

If you are able to help police with their enquiries, you can call PC Johnston on 07972 004447 email 13844@kent.police.uk quoting reference: 46/87880/20
