Four UK-based drivers were stopped for speeding this morning in a 40mph zone on the A20.

The stretch between the Roundhill Tunnels in Folkestone and the Western Heights roundabout in Dover is 40mph.

Today's action comes a month after it was revealed hundreds of foreign drivers were avoiding speeding fines.

The police stopped four motorists this morning on the A20 stretch into Dover

The speed limit is monitored by cameras - and in this morning's instance the police were keeping watch.

It is thought they were pulled over between 8am and 8.25am.

Kent Police RPU tweeted "Please slow down, it's 40 for a reason.

"That's four stopped now."

The limit has been reduced on that section of the A20 since April 2015 in a bid to control the influx of lorries heading for the Port of Dover.

During busy spells, the traffic lights on entrance to Dover stop the truckers from blocking major routes in the town.

It is understood that there are plans for a variable speed limit to be introduced.

A police spokesman said: "All four were UK-based drivers so they were reported for speeding (‘a Traffic Offence Report’).

"That’s where they’ll get a letter in the post giving them the option of a fine or they can choose to have the matter heard at court instead."
