A Kent MP has been investigated by police over sexual offence allegations.

Deal and Dover's Charlie Elphicke was questioned last month over what has been called "low-level sexual harrassment" by friends.

The Tory was suspended from the party five months ago, and has always denied knowing the nature of the accusations.

In a statement, Mr Elphicke said: "I met with police on March 12 and was then told for the first time the nature of the allegations against me.

"Until that point I was not told what the allegations which led to my having the Conservative whip suspended in early November were, despite repeated requests to the police and the Chief Whip.

"Naturally I am co-operating fully with the police and have made it clear to them that I vigorously deny any wrongdoing whatsoever.

"Now I am finally aware of the allegations the police are investigating, I am completely confident I will be able to clear my name.

"In the meantime I shall continue, as I have done over the last six months with the support of constituents and colleagues, to carry out my duties and responsibilities as MP for Dover and Deal.

"At this stage, I am unable to say anything further."

Dover and Deal Conservative Association chairman Keith Single has voiced his support.

He said: "Charlie Elphicke is the best MP Dover and Deal has ever had.

"Despite the pressure this has put Charlie and his family under, he has worked harder than ever to help his constituents over the past five months.

"The rule of law and natural justice are vital parts of who we are as a nation.

"Charlie is innocent until proven otherwise and continues to have our full support."
