The French police have been criticised after allowing a group of migrants to escape from a lorry.

Footage uploaded by the BBC yesterday shows them clambering over the HGV - but when officers draw closer they run off.

A lorry driver, who is behind the camera, asked: "Is that it you just let them go?"

The two officers responded: "You're in France but it is your problem."

It is understood an investigation has now been launched by the French authority.

Dover MP Charlie Elphicke tweeted: "Calais Mayor and Ukip want to axe our Calais border controls.

"The video shows why we need to keep the controls at Calais."
