THE future of Dover Cricket Club is still in doubt following its annual meeting. The Crabble-based club has debts totalling around £10,000.

Hopes that the annual meeting would see some positive decisions taken on how to pay them off proved unfounded.

Club secretary Dave Romans said: “Only 12 members turned up which meant we couldn't decide anything officially because we didn’t have a quorum of 15 members.”

Members who did attend heard Dover life vice-president Jack Kremer detail the club’s financial problems and the options open to them.

Mr Romans added: “After a lengthy discussion, the members decided to hold an extraordinary general meeting on January 22."

At the meeting three options will be put to the membership:

1 Decide to carry on as Dover CC and elect a new committee. In that situation the new committee and members would be liable to pay off the £10,000 debts.

2 Close down as Dover CC and form a new club whose members would hopefully not be liable for the previous club’s debts.

3 Close down the club completely.

Mr Romans stressed: “I would like to see the club keep going, but there’s no way, as far as I can see it, that we will be able to pay off the debts over the next three or four years as well as paying the normal running bills.”

Mr Romans, who is also now the acting club chairman and treasurer, warned: “If no definite decisions are taken on January 22 I will walk away (from the club), because we must decide what we are going to do at that meeting."
