Dover Athletic’s leading marksman has signed for a team who could be their rivals next season.

Stevenage look set for relegation into the National League, after finishing bottom of the pile in League 2 at the end of the 2019/20 season, but have captured striker Inih Effiong after his exit from Crabble.

Stevenage's position at the bottom of the table was confirmed after Macclesfield Town were handed a two-point deduction over non-payment of wages.

A more severe punishment would have seen Town finish bottom and Stevenage chairman Phil Wallace said he would be examining the situation closely before accepting relegation. The EFL will also have to be satisfied that the National League are able to offer Stevenage a platform to play football next season.

It’s not stopped them building a squad for whatever challenge is ahead, however, and Effiong becomes their first new signing of the summer.

Earlier this month Dover announced a number of big name players who would be leaving Crabble, including their 6ft 3inch striker who scored 16 goals in 38 appearances during the 2019/20 campaign.

He had spent the last two years with Dover.

“I am delighted to sign,” Effiong told the Stevenage website on Tuesday.

“I had a few options on the table but just the way the manager came in and showed me what he is about, what he wants to do, the ambition for the club and with the facilities here, everything is perfect to better yourself and go to the next level.”

Stevenage manager Alex Revell said: “I am delighted to bring Inih into the football club after a hugely successful season for himself.

“He is a fantastic character and will be a huge addition to the squad. His pace, power, physical strength and goals are everything that we are looking for in a striker.”
