Great escape still on the cards

RELAXED: Clive Walker

Tonbridge Angels v Dover Athletic

DOVER Athletic manager Clive Walker is in relaxed mood ahead of Saturday’s crucial clash with Tonbridge Angels.

It seems that every game since Walker returned to the club in January has been vital as he aims to achieve the impossible after they found themselves a full 15 points inside the drop zone with 15 games left to play on his appointment.

However, with his rejuvenated troops reaping the rewards of his vast managerial experience, Walker has managed to find that elusive winning formula, which deserted the Hoverspeed Stadium following his controversial sacking by the previous board in October 2003.

In the 12 league games since his return, Walker has guided the Whites to 21 points and though they are still reliant on other results going their way - with Harrow and Chestunt four points better off - the feeling around the club is that survival is still on.

Tonbridge currently lie one place and one point ahead of Dover in 20th spot. The consensus among supporters is that whoever comes out on top on Saturday will all but relegate their Kent rivals. A draw will suit neither camp.

But Walker is treating it as just another game. He said: "I have been in this game for 44 years and I have seen it all before. It is a big game but I have had bigger in my career and I will just go into it with the same attitude as I do every game - and that is you just have to win football matches.

"All I am concerned about is my side, I am not worried about anything else. I have been impressed with the players and I cannot believe they got themselves in this position as I think there is a basis of a successful side here.

"I am sure they know how to approach the game against Tonbridge because they have approached all the games since I have been back in the correct manner."
