PAUL HYDE: "I want to see this club win something and see the smiles back on the supporters' faces"

WHEN Paul Hyde is in goal for Dover sparks are always likely to fly at some stage.

Whether he is berating one of his team-mates, rushing 40 yards out of his goal to get involved in a flare-up, or taking stick from opposing fans, 'Hydey' loves being in the thick of the action.

And as Whites’ longest-serving player begins what will probably be his last campaign as a player, the 42-year-old PE teacher is determined to ensure that his testimonial season proves one to remember.

Hyde recalled: "I first played at Crabble as a youngster with Hillingdon Borough when I was 15 or 16, and after that I also played here for Wycombe (Wanderers) and Leyton Orient. It’s a fabulous stadium, the team have always been very well supported and there’s a real family atmosphere here; it’s just a lovely, lovely club.

"The club shouldn’t be where it is now but unfortunately it is. That said, we have now got a real driving force off the field with Jim Parmenter and his board, and we have got Clive (Walker) back in charge, who is a natural winner.

"I want to see this club win something and see the smiles back on the supporters’ faces because they really deserve it.

"They have stuck with the club through thick and thin over the past few seasons, and if it wasn’t for the Supporters’ Trust this club wouldn’t be here now. But, touch wood, I think Clive and the boys will give them something to cheer this year."

THE FULL INTERVIEW WITH PAUL HYDE IS IN THIS WEEK'S DOVER MERCURY.
