Dover Athletic assistant Jake Leberl said they deserved to get late goal against Guiseley

Dover Athletic assistant manager Jake Leberl said if his side had not won their game against Guiseley yesterday it would have been a “travesty”.

The Whites scored in the 88th minute to secure a 2-1 win at Crabble in the National League to put them up to sixth.

The home side dominated from the opening minutes of the match when Mitch Brundle scored from 25 yards.

Guiseley got themselves back into the match after scoring directly from a free-kick but Mitch Pinnock grabbed all three points minutes before the end.

Leberl said: “It would have been a travesty if we hadn’t have won that game. Sometimes it happens in football.

“I’m delighted for Mitch (Pinnock). He bangs goals in training left right and centre so for him to get the winner in the last minute I was really pleased for him.

“I thought we were at it from the first to last minute and it was only going to be us that was going to win it so was delighted to get the late goal.

“Everyone showed great spirit and kept going and chuffed with the three points.”

Dover dominated most of the match and goalkeeper Mitch Walker barely had a save to make.

The home side had two goals ruled out for offside and saw other chances go begging. As the clock counted down it looked like Guiseley may hold on for a point.

Leberl said: “When you are on top it’s so important to get your goals and you come in at half time and feel you deserve more than one.

“Birdy had an offside one and a few balls flashing across the box and couldn’t quite get the second.

“It was probably their only real chance so you are going in to the last 10 minutes really trying to nick a late winner and I’m really pleased we did.”

This week Anthony Jeffrey extended his loan spell with the club, from Sutton United, until the end of the season.

Leberl praised the wingers performance and hopes he can stay fit for the remainder of the campaign.

He added: “Anthony Jeffrey has unbelievable pace and trickery. You see him in training and he’s a standout player. We just need to try and get him fit and playing as many minutes as we can.

“For those types of players it’s difficult to play 90 minutes with the amount of fast sprints they do and I thought he had his best game for us today.”
