Dover Athletic not as 'sharp' as in previous games during draw with FC Halifax Town

Chris Kinnear said his Dover side weren’t as “sharp” as they have been as they drew their third match in seven days yesterday.

The Whites were held 0-0 by FC Halifax Town at Crabble after draws at Wrexham and home to Maidstone United.

Kinnear also said it was a poor game of football with the opponents setting out to play for the draw.

He said: “It wasn’t a very good game was it. The pitch was a bit boggy and they played with just one up front and five in midfield but that’s something we’ve got to cope with.

“We had two shots on target and they had one. Mitch didn’t have a save to make. At least we were trying to go forward.

“That’s what they want and that’s fair enough. I don’t care how anybody plays. Everyone plays different and they were difficult to breakdown.

“We didn’t look as sharp as we could have done but that’s football and there’s a long way to go yet.

“We haven’t lost another game and the lads are disappointed but you move on.”

Dover are fourth in the table and are just one point from second place Aldershot.

Kinnear said there is the possibility of more players coming in to bolster his squad but it is what every manager in this league will be trying to do.

He said: “We have got our core players and a good bunch of lads. Possibly there will be some signings.

“Even though we have one of the smallest squads there’s a few not playing, we will probably give them some games somewhere and bring some others in to freshen it up. Everyone is looking to improve.

“We need a run of winning games. We are one point off second so that’s the levels we put.

“We have got the ability to push on. The heavy pitch doesn’t suit us with the pace we have got around the pitch but again this season is different and if you want to be successful you have to deal with everything as it comes.”

The pitch is an issue that chairman, Jim Parmenter, brought up in his programme notes and could be something the club will look at.

However, Kinnear thinks that a 3G pitch wouldn’t be the way to go with the issue over Maidstone’s pitch rumbling on.

“I don’t think he would want a 3G pitch though,” he said. “He built the stand and stuff above for the sponsors. He wants the club to be in the football league there’s no doubt about that and if he thinks the pitch needs to be upgraded I’m sure he will do that.

“3G pitches are ideal for kids and bringing in finance. It’s much different but you make a decision as a club and it is different and it must make the home side favourites. That’s why it is difficult going there because they are used to it.”
