M2: Crash involving car transporter and lorries near Faversham

By: Bess Browning

Published: 06:40, 14 June 2017

Part of the M2 was closed for more than six hours after a crash involving a car transporter and two lorries.

The coastbound motorway was shut between junction 6 for Faversham and junction 7 for Brenley Corner after the accident at around 3.10pm with traffic backing up at one stage all the way to junction 5 for Sittingbourne and Sheppey.

One lane reopened just before 11pm, and the other lanes reopened at around 1am.

Drivers endured long delays on alternative routes, with Highways England warning the road could be closed late into the evening, although the agency later said one lane would reopen.

Police, paramedics and fire crews were all called to the scene.

One of the cars has come off the transporter and blocked the carriageway.

A police spokesman said last night: "A person is being treated for injuries that are described as minor.

"Kent Fire and Rescue Service are also attending due to a fuel spillage.

"The coastbound carriageway between junction 6 and 7 will remain closed for up to three hours and drivers are advised to seek alternative routes."

Highways England says there were "severe delays" with queues going all the way back to junction 5 for Sittingbourne.

It confirmed a mechanical sweeper was being used to clear debris from the motorway.

Motorists stuck in the tailbacks reported being at a standstill for more than four hours.

Police later confirmed they had closed junction 5 of the A249 coastbound to prevent any more traffic from getting joining the motorway.

Meanwhile, many drivers took to social media to complain about road users going down the hard shoulder in an attempt to jump the queue.
