The majority of Faversham pubs are on 'lockdown' tonight in an attempt to avoid trouble following the funeral today of Michael Shepherd, killed in a crash on New Year's Day.

Landlord of the Old Wine Vaults, David Thompson, said: "Police didn't ask us to close - we took that decision due to a large funeral in town this afternoon.

"Some of the people attending are barred from the pub, and we wanted to avoid any unpleasantness on what must be a very sad day for the family."

He continued: "I took a walk around town earlier and it seemed peaceful enough and we will be reviewing our decision later this evening."

The funeral of Mr Shepherd was held today in the town.

He was killed in a crash in Teynham in the early hours of New Year's Day, alongside his friend Karl Buchan.

Police are on the scene, but say they have not been called to deal with any offences.

A Kent Police spokesman said: "Division-wide officers were in Faversham town centre today to support local officers and help provide a visible policing presence."
