There were long delays on the M2 this morning after a lorry carrying beer and wine caught fire overnight.

The HGV burst into flames around a mile-and-a-half after junction 6 for Faversham on the London-bound side at around midnight.

The motorway was closed in the aftermath so the vehicle could be recovered and debris cleared from the road.

One lane reopened at 1.30am and the second lane reopened just before 8am.

Congestion did not clear until 8.30am. Traffic is now back to normal.

A fire service spokesman said: "Crews wearing breathing apparatus, extinguished the fire in an articulated lorry trailer, which contained wine and beer, with two hose reels.

"The driver of the vehicle had successfully managed to uncouple the trailer and was out of the vehicle when firefighters arrived on scene.

"The fire was extinguished by 12.50am and crews left around 20 minutes later."
