Popular Faversham Kebab House owner Mehmet Ozel dies

The much-loved founder of a popular Turkish restaurant has died, his family have announced.

Mehmet Ozel, known to most people as George, was a popular face at the Faversham Kebab House in Preston Street.

In a post on the restaurant's Facebook page, they announced the Faversham favourite had "died peacefully in his sleep" on Monday.

"George was dedicated to his business, family, friends and customers," they write.

"He was a true believer of hospitality, it gave him so much enjoyment to provide a warm service to his customers.

"The Faversham Kebab House was his home away from home and his customers were like his family."

The post stated he was buried in Turkey on Wednesday, but due to the coronavirus pandemic, his children, family and friends in the UK could not attend.

"When things are 'back to normal' we will hold a service for our adorable George, but for now, please stay safe," it added.

George was born and grew up in Turkey, only moving to London in 1973 when he was 24 and relocating to Faversham in 1983.

He opened the kebab shop in 1986 after buying the post office and music shop next door - and was revamped into the restaurant it is today.

The much-loved Faversham businessman also opened the the Moonlight Café and another Turkish restaurant in Tenterden.

Faversham Kebab House has received many awards over the years, including gongs from TripAdvisor for having the best takeaway in the town.
