Major work to upgrade a roundabout at a junction of the M2 is no longer set to start tonight - but drivers are being warned to expect disruption as less vital work is carried out over the weekend.

Brenley Corner at junction 7 of the motorway was to be closed for two weekends for waterproofing and surfacing works on the pothole-ridden bridge decks of the roundabout, which is among the 50 worst accident blackspots in the country.

But roadworks will still be happening at the junction on Friday night with a "full closure" of the A2 from Canterbury to Faversham from 8pm until 6am on Saturday, highway chiefs say.

Highways England are warning drivers to "expect disruption" at the junction this weekend with Saturday night also pencilled in as a "contingency".

A spokesman said: "Traffic on the A2 heading for Faversham or the A299 will be diverted onto the M2 Londonbound to junction 6.

"They will use the junction to turn around and re-join the M2 heading coastbound where it can then exit at Brenley Corner for Faversham or continue on to the A299 Thanet Way.

"This will only affect traffic heading on the A2 to Faversham, so will not affect traffic to Canterbury, Thanet or Whitstable. The A299 is unaffected."

It was originally thought four toucan crossings would be installed during an upgraded at the junction, which is met by the A2, M2 and A299 Thanet Way near Faversham.

However, Highways England says it recently carried out resurfacing on the bridge decks over the M2 to address the most serious of carriageway defects.

Work will start at Brenley Corner this weekend

But work will be happening on the roundabout tonight and tomorrow night to address some issues with the bridge deck, but further, more extensive repairs are still needed.

This will still require weekend closures, but road chiefs say the works have not yet to be programmed.

The specific details of dates and road closures have yet to be released, but Highways England has applied for a traffic restriction order.

It allows for the closure of both carriageways of the A2 between Faversham and Thanington, as well as the A299 and M2 where they meet the junction.
