Stunned rail staff called police after a gun was left on a train.

The weapon, later found to be a BB gun, was discovered on board a Southeastern train at Faversham on Monday night.

The gun was left on a train

Staff alerted British Transport Police, and officers were sent to the scene to seize the gun.

One shocked social media user tweeted police: "To think how tragic that could have been if a small child had found it and thought it was a toy."

A police spokesman said: "A irearms unit came out and made it safe and confirmed it was a BB gun. Never the less (it is) very dangerous to possess."

The incident came on a busy night for British Transport Police officers, who were also called to a brawl involving several people at Ashford International Station.
