A former Gillingham midfielder has become the latest to join Faversham’s mouthwatering Southern Counties East Premier Division squad.

Billy Bingham, 33, only stepped away from full-time football with the National League Ravens last month - but now is set to play at Step 5 in the non-league pyramid.

Bingham played more than 100 games for Bromley and helped them win the FA Trophy at Wembley in 2022 as they beat Hollywood-backed Wrexham 1-0 through Michael Cheek’s goal.

“[I’m] absolutely over the moon to sign a player of Billy's calibre and experience,” Town boss Sammy Moore told the club’s website on Thursday. “This is a massive coup for our fantastic club.

“A real top player that has bags of quality.

"The fans will love him with his all-action midfield play. A huge thank you to the chairman [Gary Smart] and the board for their backing.”

Bingham, who played for Gills from 2017 until he was released in 2019, goes straight into the Lilywhites’ squad to host early frontrunners Fisher this Saturday.

Town manager Moore: Table counts for nothing yet

“I'm really looking forward to starting a new chapter in my career at Faversham Town,” he said.

"I can't wait to get started and let's make it a successful season.

“Thanks for the support I have received and I look forward to seeing everyone on Saturday."

Vice-chairman Marc Leader added: "This signing shows our support for the management and our intent to get back to the Isthmian Leagues and beyond.

“It's great to have such an experienced and talented player, like Billy, join the Faversham family."

He’s the latest big-name signing at ambitious Faversham who also have ex-Dartford defender Connor Essam and record recruit Warren Mfula, as well as former Football League frontman Stefan Payne and goalkeeper Hafed Al-Droubi in their ranks. The latter two have also only joined in the past seven days.

But Town have had a mixed start to their campaign, despite beating higher-division Merstham in the FA Cup.

They have six points from four league games and were beaten 4-0 at home by Isthmian Premier Lewes in the FA Cup First Qualifying Round at the weekend.
