Faversham Town's Solomon Taiwo describes how he scored direct from a corner after taking on a challenge from a fan

Faversham Town midfielder Solomon Taiwo has spoken about the moment he scored direct from a corner after accepting a challenge from a fan.

Former Town player Julian Beal can claim an assist after telling Taiwo he would buy him a beer if he pulled off the unlikely feat.

The former Cardiff man doesn’t drink beer but happily accepted two Jack Daniel’s and cokes after whipping a perfect corner into the net off the far post to give his side the lead in their 2-1 Isthmian South East win against Chichester on Saturday.

Taiwo said: “I’ve gone to take the corner and the guy’s enjoying himself.

“He’s said to me, jovially, ‘I bet you can’t score from there’ and then a few of them were going at me. He said, ‘If you score from there I’ll buy you a beer’.

“I don’t drink beer but I thought I’d give it a go and it’s gone in at the far top corner, off the post.”

Taiwo figured the corner could still cause problems even if it didn’t go in, so it was worth a try.

He might not have got away with it during his Football League days but there’s more freedom in the part-time game.

Taiwo said: “It was 0-0 at the time and as much as the game’s very important and I understand we need to win, there’s not as much at stake.

“If I’d tried that in the Football League and it hadn’t gone in, the manager would be saying, ‘Look, we’ve been working on a certain corner and you decide to go for goal’, and I could be out the team for two or three weeks.

“In non-league you don’t work on these things so much, no disrespect, so you can be more off-the-cuff. Two or three players heard what was going on but apart from that everyone else thought it was an accident.

“In all fairness, I can’t take all the plaudits. I could try it 100 times and it wouldn’t happen, especially the way it went in, but the stars aligned. It was talent but also a lot of luck.”

Faversham visit Ashford on Saturday with Taiwo set to revert to more conventional corners.

He said: “It’s not something I’m going to try week in, week out.

“As much as I could probably pull it off again, I’d have to waste 10 corners for it to happen so I’m not going to sit here and say I can do it every game.

“I think Thierry Henry may have done it a couple of times but we’re talking about world-class players and then there’s me, a mere non-league player.”
