An arrest has been made after 'offensive' graffiti was discovered sprawled on a wall.

The message has since been removed from the wall in Military Road, Hythe, after it was reported to Folkestone and Hythe District Council (FHDC).

Such was the nature of the graffiti, that officers from the council removed it within an hour of it being reported to them.

It is not known what the graffiti said, with the authority confirming they would 'rather not disclose the message written'.

A spokesman for FHDC said: "Our area officers were busy at work when they received an unfortunate report of offensive graffiti in the Sandgate area.

"Due to the nature of the incident, they prioritised the call and removed it within an hour of notification.

"They would rather spend time on other things - there are other projects which would be much more beneficial to the community.

"But it’s just one example of the great work done by the team."

The council urged anyone with information to report it to the police.

A man has since been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage. He has been bailed until Friday, December 11.

A police spokesman said: "Kent Police received a report at 4.24pm on Thursday, November 12 that offensive graffiti had been painted in Military Road, Hythe.

"A 37-year-old man of no fixed address was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage on November 13."

Earlier this year, concerns were raised over the vast amount of graffiti which had been scrawled on public spaces, private property and even churches in neighbouring Folkestone.

And in 2019, the town was compared to a shanty by a pensioner who reported endless graffiti near her home.
