Fire broke out on the fifth floor of retirement flats in Folkestone

A 90-year-old man died after a fire engulfed the bedroom of his flat.

Emergency services were called to Homepine House in Sandgate Road, Folkestone, a block of retirement flats, to reports a fire had broken out in a bedroom.

Firefighters from Canterbury attended along with the police at 9pm last night.

The fire broke out on the fifth floor, and despite the best efforts of emergency services, a man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.

A police spokesman said: "A man, aged in his 90s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

"His next of kin have been informed.

"The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a report will duly be prepared for the coroner."
