.A kitchen fire smoke-logged an entire house and destroyed the cooker.

The fire broke out at Broadmead Road, Folkestone, at about 7pm yesterday (Nov 17).

Cooking inside the oven caught light and the flames wrecked the cooker and burned up an nearby ironing board and baskets of clothes.

The fire then spread to the rest of the house but the occupants got out unharmed.

Two fire engines from the Folkestone station arrived and the crews used breathing appartus to fight the flames.

They also cleared the smoke with a positive pressure ventilator, an outsize form of fan.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service regularly warn people to keep an eye on their cooking but Folkestone firefighter Richard Gatehouse added: “The kitchen door was left open, allowing the smoke to reach the rest of the house.

“Doors need to be closed in the event of a fire to help stop it spreading.”

The house also had no smoke alarm so crews fitted one.

The kitchen was completely blacked out with smoke and crews were at the scene for about 45 minutes.
