Nautical nurses put men to shame in the raft race at the annual Folkestone Harbour Festival.

The girls from the William Harvey Hospital romped home in third place, beating many men-only teams.

“They were fantastic,” said race organiser Richard Baughan. “They left a load of the men standing and surprised everyone – at one stage we thought they would win.”

The race on Saturday was part of a weekend of events which also saw powerboat and thundercat races, live music, food stalls and a bikers get-togther.

Festival organsier Mike Edson said between 3,000 and 4,000 people were there over the two days.

“It went really well,” he said. “The Thundercats were amazing as always and the powerboats were good but could not race on Sunday because of the weather.

“People seemed to enjoy it and we have not had any negative comments.”

Money raised from the festival goes to the RNLI and the Folkestone rescue boat.
