Migrants believed to have stowed away in Calais have been discovered in a lorry in Folkestone

Ten people were found in the back of an HGV in a lorry park near the harbour at about 4.30pm yesterday.

Firefighters were called and helped several men down from their hiding place on top of goods in the trailer.

The migrants were taken away by police, according to eye witnesses.

A police spokesman said: "Ten migrants were found in the back of an articulated lorry parked at the lorry park in Folkestone at around 4.30 pm.

"They were all fine and taken by police to Dover Immigration Centre and are now under their care."

Lorry drivers have been warned to secure vehicles and be on their guard following scenes of chaos in Calais.

Earlier on Wednesday, MP Damian Collins branded the way French authorities handled the strikes by French port workers causing the delays as "shameful".

He said the France had become "complicit" in offering desperate migrants the opportunity to climb aboard lorries bound for the UK as hundreds of vehicles waited in queues around the port.
