Fire crews were also called, and used hydraulic rescue equipment to cut a man free from the wreckage.

The west bound carriageway was closed to allow the air ambulance to land, but was opened again at 4.50pm.

Two out of three lanes on the east-bound carriageway remain closed and police crash investigators are at the scene.

Highways Agency crews are working to repair the central reservation which is believed to have been badly damaged in the accident.

An earlier crash happened between Ashford and Hythe when two lorries collided, blocking two lanes.

Kent Police were called at 1.55pm and officers had to implement a rolling road block from Junction 10 at Ashford while the vehicles were recovered.

The road was re-opened at 2.50pm.
