An Only Fools and Horses-themed barber’s shop has been forced to close by soaring overheads at its town centre location.

Nathan Scotford, who ran Cushty Cuts in Folkestone for a decade, says the costs of maintaining the premises had simply become too high to continue trading.

The Bouverie Road West shop has now closed its doors for the final time, and Mr Scotford says he now plans to continue cutting hair under the Cushty Cuts name from a cabin at his home in Plimsoll Avenue.

“It's been a pleasurable journey but it's been tough,” the 41-year-old said of his time at the shop.

“The fundamentals are that the high street, being in the town, it’s hard work these days.

“I am eternally grateful to everyone who has come in to support it over the years, and hopefully I can continue to offer a cushty cut going forward in the cabin.”

The Only Fools and Horses superfan named his shop in honour of one of Del Boy's famous catchphrases, and the premises in Bouverie Road West was part barber’s shop, part museum of the much-loved sitcom – with memorabilia covering every available space.

He even went as far as getting Sir David Jason’s autograph tattooed on his arm after the actor who played Del Boy signed his forearm at a convention celebrating the hit BBC sitcom.

Mr Scotford was keen to thank all his staff for their efforts over the years, and said he will always have fond memories of the shop.

He said: “To basically say goodbye to it has been very, very emotional to do.

“Even though it is just a shop, it's a lot more than that to me and always will be.”
