A main road alongside a Morrisons supermarket ravaged by a fire has been re-opened but with temporary traffic lights in place.

Three-way lights are in operation in Cheriton Road, Folkestone, following the devastating blaze at yesterday.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service confirmed this morning the fire has been fully extinguished, with Morrisons taking back duty of care for the site.

Cheriton Road was shut in both directions as emergency services attended the huge fire which started at around 7am in a deep fat fryer and quickly spread to the roof.

Drone footage captured the dramatic blaze from the sky while a police cordon was put in place around 400m away from the supermarket.

The Three Hills Sports Park, next to the supermarket, was evacuated because of the smoke coming from the store after the roof entirely collapsed.

The British Red Cross was also called out to the scene by Kent Fire and Rescue.

About 50 firefighters in 12 engines fought to bring the blaze under control at its worst.

Two height vehicles and a command support unit were also at the scene. The incident was later scaled down to six fire engines and two height vehicles.

A police cordon was set up in Cheriton Road about 400 metres away from Morrisons, with police guiding traffic up Cornwallis Avenue.

Not everyone was disrupted by the blaze, though.

Many pupils at nearby Harvey Grammar School were disappointed to learn the school opened as usual.
