Neil Cugley says Folkestone Invicta's Ryman League destiny remains in their own hands

Neil Cugley says Folkestone can’t rely on anyone else to do them favours in their Ryman League, Premier Division survival push, they have to do it themselves.

Despite Saturday’s 7-1 defeat at leaders Bognor and Tuesday's 2-1 loss at Leiston, boss Cugley remains optimistic about Invicta’s fate.

He said: “It’s great that it’s still in our hands. If we can get something on Saturday at Lowestoft (3pm), then it leaves us knowing exactly where we stand before going back home.

“The results just go to show that nobody wants to drop out of this league. We were five points ahead of Canvey Island a week or so ago and now they are ahead of us. Nobody would have expected Kingstonian to be down there.

“There is still a lot of hard work to do, we can’t rely on anyone else to do it for us, it’s up to us and what we do.”

Folkestone stunned Bognor by taking the lead at Nywood Lane at the weekend but the Rocks roared back in the second half, with five of the seven goals coming in the final 13 minutes.

Boss Cugley refused to get too downbeat and said: “We went 1-0 up and were playing well but we didn’t get tight enough which allowed them to get back into it.

“When you go 3-1 down what do you do? Do you defend or do you try and go and get yourselves a goal back?

“That’s what we did. We had four forwards on but credit to them, they broke us down and picked us off.

“It’s never nice to be on the end of a score like that but it does say something that they announced their goalkeeper as their man-of-the-match.”

Tuesday's Leiston loss was a fourth straight away defeat for Cugley’s men, following the 2-0 defeat at fellow strugglers Leatherhead the previous Wednesday.
