Frustration for Cugley in player search

Invicta manager Neil Cugley

Folkestone Invicta manager Neil Cugley looks set to face a double disappointment as he attempts to bolster his goal-shy attack.

Cugley was hoping to strengthen ahead of Invicta’s game at Walton and Hersham on Saturday.

Invicta have failed to register a goal in their last four games and in an attempt to rectify the problem, Cugley put in seven-day approaches for Faversham’s Damian Abel and Chatham’s Rob Denness. But both players look to be staying put.

Abel, who has had two previous spells with Folkestone, turned down a return to his home-town club while Chatham manager Steve Binks confirmed that Denness has also snubbed a move to the Buzzlines Stadium.

Binks said: "Rob is not going. It was quite a quick decision for him to make."

Faversham’s 14-goal striker Abel is enjoying his time with the Kent League side and their manager Justin Luchford said: "I’m delighted he’s staying.

"We’re doing all right and he’s been there twice before and it hasn’t worked out. I don’t think a move to Folkestone is a forward move for him."

Cugley’s woes weren’t helped by the loss of player/coach Scott Lindsey.

He became the latest person to leave the club after he was offered a youth coaching role at Gillingham and the midfielder took his place on a three-man bench for the final time during last Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Sittingbourne.

Cugley added: "Scott has been excellent and I’m delighted he’s got the chance to forward his coaching career."

Invicta’s home league game with Whyteleafe will now take place on Tuesday, January 27 after it was called off again on Tuesday due to a frozen pitch. Their Kent Senior Cup quarter-final at Welling United is scheduled for Tuesday, February 10.
